The Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) said on Friday that it will make recommendations on the recent review of electricity tariffs announced by the state government.

Speaker of the Chamber, TR Kesavan, said: “MCCI had given a recommendation earlier. We will work on it now. So unless we give a solution to reduce the cost of the system and find an alternative, they have no choice. Our report will therefore examine how to optimize and do better to help the government and the consumer. »

Mr Kesavan stressed that there was a revenue problem for the government, “but we have to find an alternative solution”.

For the coming year, the chamber has identified some key areas to focus on, such as industry 4.0, electric vehicles, fintech, climate change and sustainability, education and skills, arbitration and the encouragement of start-ups.

For the skills part, the chamber recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation within the framework of the “Naan Mudalvan Scheme”.

“This is an area we will focus on. Besides skills, upskilling and retraining will be a priority area. The chamber has 12 expert committees and we will use our resources to train young people,” Mr. Kesavan.

MCCI is working on publishing a ready calculator or regulatory compliance manual titled Doing Business in Tamil Nadu working closely with the government to encourage new investment and maintain a favorable business climate.

Mr. Kesavan said Tamil Nadu, despite the pandemic setback, was able to recover faster than many other states due to its resilient and robust public health system and concerted efforts. He noted that the State Gross Domestic Product (GSDP) of Tamil Nadu rebounded to 14.6% in FY 2021-22 and is expected to increase by 14% in FY 2022-23 according to the data.

“The state government has undertaken various initiatives such as allocating ₹100 crore to improve export business infrastructure, establishing a knowledge city and issuing an export promotion strategy to make Tamil Nadu a leader among Indian states in export,” he said.
