Suspension of US tariffs on Irish cream and liqueurs

The European Union and the United States reached an agreement to end the dispute over large civilian aircraft, which had drawn Irish cream and other liquors into a trade war resulting in increased import costs on the American market.

The trade war between the EU and the United States is part of a 16-year disagreement between aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing. In 2019, the U.S. government imposed tariffs on $ 7.5 billion of EU products, including single malt scotch and Irish single malt whiskey, due to the disagreement.

This intensified when the World Trade Organization sanctioned the EU for imposing nearly $ 4 billion in tariffs on American products.

Drinks Ireland | Spirits hailed the deal, which amounts to a five-year suspension of all tariffs in the Airbus / Boeing dispute, including on Irish cream and other Irish liqueurs.

Vincent McGovern, Head of Drinks Ireland | Spirits, said: “This is a positive development for Irish spirits as the United States is a vitally important market for our industry. In 2019, it was the leading market for Irish spirits at IG (Irish Whiskey, Irish Cream and Poitín), with 2,385,800 nine-liter cases of Irish cream exported from Ireland to the United States that year. Opening up trade is essential for our sector and we hope that the removal of tariffs will help develop the Irish Cream category in this market in the years to come. “

“The five-year suspension of these distilled spirits tariffs comes at a critical time for the US hospitality industry,” said Chris Swonger, President and CEO of Discus. “We appreciate the work of the Biden administration to restore relations with our trade allies.”
