The Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) has said it wants to increase its water rates by 50 percent in an effort to support operating costs.

Speaking in an interface with editors from various news houses in Zomba on Thursday, SRWB chairman Ibrahim Matola said that since 2018 the board has not made any price adjustments. , a development which, according to him, resulted in the loss of the institution. .

Matola said that despite the increase in the cost of materials and production, SRWB remains the cheapest in the country.

“We believe it is time to increase our water prices if we are to continue to provide better quality services to our customers.

“This adjustment is not intended to punish Malawians, but to support our operational costs which are too high compared to our current tariffs,” said Matola.

Based on current prices, SRWB sells 1,050 liters of water at 337.40 K and 4,200 liters at 1349.60 K, which Matola says is relatively inexpensive.

Of the proposed tariffs, 1,050 liters would be sold at 674.80 K while 4,200 to 2,699.20 K.

Matola therefore called on the media to help educate Malawians on why the council considers it necessary to increase tariffs.

Times Group media editor Steven Dakalira praised the board for engaging the media, saying engagement would improve in crafting messages that allow the public to better understand the board’s decision. ‘administration.
