Mexico suspends tariffs on poultry imports

The absence of tariffs, which will continue for a year, is valid for nations authorized to export these products to the country, which, in the case of poultry, includes Brazil or Argentina. No quota was noted.

Currently, inflation stands at 7.68% year on year, nearly double the central bank’s target.

“With the aim of reducing inflation and the drop in consumption of Mexican households, through various measures, among which the exemption of 21 products from the basic basket and 6 strategic inputs from import duties”, explained the Official Journal of the Federation.

Brazil is ready

According to the president of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), Ricardo Santin, Brazil has increased its relevance among Mexico’s food security partners.

“Brazil has supplemented the Mexican demand for chicken meat, collaborating with the local industry… In this context, it is expected that our country will be able to increase volumes for this destination”, analyzes Santin.

According to ABPA data, Mexico is currently the 8th largest importer of Brazilian chicken. Between January and April, the country imported 58,500 tonnes, up 128.6% compared to the same period in 2021 (25,600 tonnes).

The results are partly explained by the highly pathogenic avian flu pandemic in more than 30 states in the United States, Mexico’s traditional supplier.

Compensate China

Brazilian chicken exports to China fell sharply in April, but meanwhile shipments are increasing to Arab and European countries. This scenario keeps Brazil close to a record export level.

Strong demand from abroad has pushed up the average prices of the product. In addition to the war in Ukraine, a major global supplier of chicken meat, recent cases of bird flu have limited international supplies from Europe and the United States.

According to data from Secex (Secretary of Foreign Trade), Brazil exported 418,200 tons of chicken meat in April, a slight decrease of 0.1% compared to March, but still 5.7% more than the April 2021 issue.

Between March and April, chicken meat exports to China fell 23.5%, totaling 46,100 tonnes last month. On the other hand, to the United Arab Emirates, Brazil shipped 42.7 thousand tons of product last month, an increase of 17.7% compared to March, according to Secex.

To the Netherlands, Brazil exported 13,800 tonnes of chicken meat in April, a staggering 35.3% increase in the monthly comparison.
