Electricity could become cheaper in Bihar as electric tiles and tariffs are subject to revision, reported Live Hindustan, the sister publication of the Hindustan Times. The electricity department has already developed a strategy to carry out the plan, however, the consent of the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BRRC) has not yet been requested.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Energy Secretary Sanjeev Hans said they were working to reduce categories in electricity, which had previously been reduced from 90 to 36.

The changes will also be made to the power tiles, which will be further reduced to two in the coming days from three currently.

The official also said that a 3% discount is given on the online submission of electricity bills, down from 2.5% previously.

The official also spoke about smart and prepaid meters that will soon be installed in Bihar. He said that smart meters would be more beneficial to customers because there is no charge for installing smart meters. Once the installation is complete, the company that installed the meters will also keep a maintenance check for at least 8 years.

Notably, 17.5 million electricity meters in Bihar will be converted to smart prepayment meters by 2025. The meters will not require manual reading for billing, bill distribution, charge collection and disconnection in case of non-payment of contributions.

Earlier this year, the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) approved an average cumulative electricity tariff increase of 0.63 percent from the current tariff for the 2021-2022 fiscal year.

For domestic urban customers, the electricity tariff has been increased from 5 paise to 35 paise per unit. However, for those who consume more electricity (more than 300 units in the existing category), the commission reduced the unit rate by ??8.50 to ??8.05.
