NEW DELHI: Telecom infrastructure body Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA) said on Monday it had urged the Food Secretary to review the electricity tariff levied on telecom companies across the country as a result of improved capital expenditure required for 5G network deployment.

The association called for an industrial-grade electricity rate for telecommunications companies compared to the commercial-grade rate charged in most parts of the country. In a letter the association wrote to ruling secretary Alok Kumar, it said the availability of 5G networks would necessarily require network densification in the form of several small cells at short distance rather than one tall tower or the masts. .

“Additionally, enhanced fiberization is essential for 5G services and to achieve the National Broadband Mission (NBM) goals of 50 lakh km fiberization, 70% tower fiberization and 50 megabits per second broadband speed. . This would result in heavy capital expenditure, thereby increasing the cost of telecommunications services, leading to a greater digital divide,” DIPA said in a statement.
